[659] A phenomenon with thought (savitakka dhamma) is a condition, by immediacy condition (anantara-paccaya), for a phenomenon with thought: the preceding aggregates (khandhā) with thought are a condition, by immediacy condition, for the succeeding aggregates with thought. A phenomenon with thought is a condition, by immediacy condition, for a phenomenon without thought (avitakka dhamma): the preceding aggregates with thought are a condition, by immediacy condition, for each succeeding phenomenon without thought; a death consciousness (cuticitta) with thought is a condition, by immediacy condition, for a rebirth consciousness (upapatticitta) without thought; adverting (āvajjanā) is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the five consciousnesses (viññāṇa); aggregates with thought are a condition, by immediacy condition, for emergence (vuṭṭhāna) without thought; the preliminary work (parikamma) for the second jhāna is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the second jhāna; the preliminary work for the third jhāna … the preliminary work for the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana) is a condition for the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception; the preliminary work for the divine eye (dibbacakkhu) … the preliminary work for the divine ear element (dibbā sotadhātu) … the preliminary work for the knowledge (ñāṇa) of the modes of supernormal power (iddhividha-ñāṇa) … for the knowledge encompassing the minds of others (cetopariya-ñāṇa) … for the knowledge of the recollection of past abodes (pubbenivāsānussati-ñāṇa) … the preliminary work for the knowledge of faring according to kamma (yathākammupaga-ñāṇa) is a condition for the knowledge of faring according to kamma; the preliminary work for the knowledge of the future (anāgataṃsa-ñāṇa) is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the knowledge of the future; change-of-lineage (gotrabhū) is a condition for the path (magga) without thought; cleansing (vodāna) is a condition for the path without thought; conformity (anuloma) is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the attainment of fruition (phalasamāpatti) without thought. A phenomenon without thought is a condition, by immediacy condition, for a phenomenon with thought and a phenomenon without thought: each preceding thought is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the succeeding aggregates with thought and for the thought. A phenomenon with thought and a phenomenon without thought are a condition, by immediacy condition, for a phenomenon with thought: the preceding aggregates with thought and the thought are a condition, by immediacy condition, for the succeeding aggregates with thought.
