[187] A phenomenon without applied thought and without sustained thought (avitakka-avicāra dhamma) is a condition, by immediacy condition (anantara-paccaya), for a phenomenon with applied thought and with sustained thought (savitakka-savicāra dhamma) and for a phenomenon without applied thought but with sustained thought only (avitakka-vicāramatta dhamma).
The death consciousness (cuticitta) that is without applied thought and without sustained thought, and sustained thought (vicāra), are a condition, by immediacy condition, for the rebirth consciousness (upapatticitta) that is with applied thought and with sustained thought, and for applied thought (vitakka).
The life-continuum (bhavaṅga) that is without applied thought and without sustained thought, and sustained thought, are a condition, by immediacy condition, for adverting (āvajjana) and for applied thought.
Aggregates (khandhā) that are without applied thought and without sustained thought, and sustained thought, are a condition, by immediacy condition, for emergence (vuṭṭhāna) that is with applied thought and with sustained thought, and for applied thought.
The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana) of one emerging from cessation (nirodha) is a condition, by immediacy condition, for the fruition attainment (phalasamāpatti) that is with applied thought and with sustained thought, and for applied thought.
