[274] A phenomenon (dhamma) accompanied by thought and examination (savitakka-savicāra) is a condition, by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya), for a phenomenon without thought and with examination only (avitakka-vicāramatta):
Object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: Depending on faith (saddhā) accompanied by thought and examination, one produces jhāna without thought and with examination only, the path (magga) … attainment (samāpatti) …; [depending on] virtue (sīla) accompanied by thought and examination. (Abbreviated.) Depending on aspiration (patthanā), one produces jhāna without thought and with examination only, the path … attainment ….
Faith accompanied by thought and examination … aspiration is a condition, by decisive-support condition, for faith, virtue, learning (suta), generosity (cāga), and wisdom (paññā) that are without thought and with examination only, and for thought (vitakka).
