[275] A phenomenon (dhamma) accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thought (savitakka-savicāra) is a condition for a phenomenon without thought-conception and without discursive thought (avitakka-avicāra) by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya): proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: In dependence on faith (saddhā) accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thought, one produces jhāna that is without thought-conception and without discursive thought; the path (magga) … superknowledge (abhiññā) … one produces the attainment (samāpatti). In dependence on virtue (sīla) accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thought … aspiration (patthanā), one produces jhāna that is without thought-conception and without discursive thought; the path … superknowledge … one produces the attainment.
Faith accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thought … (abridged) … aspiration is a condition, by decisive-support condition, for faith that is without thought-conception and without discursive thought, for virtue, for learning (suta), for generosity (cāga), for wisdom (paññā), and for discursive thought (vicāra), for bodily pleasure (kāyika sukha), for bodily pain (kāyika dukkha).
