[283] A phenomenon (dhamma) without thought and without examination (avitakka-avicāra) is a condition for a phenomenon without thought and without examination by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya): object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: In dependence on faith (saddhā) that is without thought and without examination, one produces jhāna that is without thought and without examination; the path (magga) … superknowledge (abhiññā) … one produces an attainment (samāpatti). In dependence on virtue (sīla) that is without thought and without examination … learning (suta), generosity (cāga), wisdom (paññā), examination (vicāra), bodily pleasure (kāyika sukha), bodily pain (kāyika dukkha), climate (utu), food (bhojana) … lodging (senāsana), one produces jhāna that is without thought and without examination; the path … superknowledge … one produces an attainment.
Faith that is without thought and without examination … virtue, learning, generosity, wisdom, examination, bodily pleasure, bodily pain, climate, food … lodging are a condition, by decisive-support condition, for faith that is without thought and without examination, for virtue, for learning, for generosity, for wisdom, for examination, for bodily pleasure, for bodily pain.
