[284] A phenomenon (dhamma) without applied thought and without sustained thought (avitakka-avicāra) is a condition for a phenomenon with applied thought and with sustained thought (savitakka-savicāra) by decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya): object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: Depending on faith (saddhā) that is without applied thought and without sustained thought, one gives a gift (dāna), undertakes virtue (sīla), performs the uposatha observance, arouses jhāna that is with applied thought and with sustained thought, insight (vipassanā) … the path (magga) … arouses an attainment (samāpatti), conceives conceit (māna), grasps a view (diṭṭhi).
Depending on virtue that is without applied thought and without sustained thought … learning (suta), generosity (cāga), wisdom (paññā), sustained thought (vicāra), bodily pleasure (kāyika sukha), bodily pain (kāyika dukkha), climate (utu), food (bhojana) … lodging (senāsana), one gives a gift, undertakes virtue, performs the uposatha observance, arouses jhāna that is with applied thought and with sustained thought, insight … the path … arouses an attainment, kills a living being, causes schism in the Saṅgha.
Faith that is without applied thought and without sustained thought … (abbreviated) … lodging is a condition for faith that is with applied thought and with sustained thought, for virtue … for aspiration (patthanā), by decisive-support condition.
