[285] A phenomenon (dhamma) without thought and without examination (avitakka-avicāra) is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition (upanissaya-paccaya), for a phenomenon without thought, with examination only (avitakka-vicāramatta): object decisive-support (ārammaṇūpanissaya), proximity decisive-support (anantarūpanissaya), natural decisive-support (pakatūpanissaya).
Natural decisive-support: In dependence on faith (saddhā) that is without thought and without examination, one gives rise to jhāna that is without thought, with examination only; insight (vipassanā) … the path (magga) … one gives rise to an attainment (samāpatti). In dependence on virtue (sīla) that is without thought and without examination … a lodging (senāsana), one gives rise to jhāna that is without thought, with examination only; insight … the path … one gives rise to an attainment. Faith that is without thought and without examination … a lodging is a condition, by way of decisive-support condition, for faith that is without thought, with examination only, for virtue, for learning (suta), for generosity (cāga), for wisdom (paññā), and for thought (vitakka).
