[408] A clinging phenomenon (upādāno dhammo) is a condition (paccaya), by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya), for a clinging phenomenon: with reference to (ārabbha) clingings, clingings arise. The three (sections) are to be done by way of "with reference to."
A non-clinging phenomenon (no-upādāno dhammo) is a condition, by object condition, for a non-clinging phenomenon: Having given a gift (dāna), virtue (sīla) … having performed the uposatha observance (uposathakamma), one reviews that, relishes it, and delights in it; with reference to that, lust (rāga) …, view (diṭṭhi), doubt, restlessness …, grief arises. Things formerly well practiced …. Having emerged from jhāna, one reviews the jhāna. The noble ones, having emerged from the path, review the path; the fruit (phala) …; they review Nibbāna; Nibbāna is a condition, by object condition, for change-of-lineage (gotrabhū), for purification (vodāna), for the path, for the fruit, and for adverting (āvajjanā). The noble ones review the abandoned defilements (kilesa) that are non-clinging …, they review the suppressed defilements; (defilements) formerly arisen habitually …; the eye … the base (vatthu) … the non-clinging aggregates as impermanent … grief arises. One sees a form with the divine eye (dibbacakkhu), one hears a sound with the divine ear element (dibbā sotadhātu); by the knowledge (ñāṇa) that encompasses the minds of others (cetopariyañāṇa) one knows the mind (citta) of one who possesses a non-clinging mind. The base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana) (is a condition) for the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana); the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana) …; the form base (rūpāyatana) for eye-consciousness; the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) …. Non-clinging aggregates are a condition, by object condition, for the knowledge of the modes of psychic power (iddhividha-ñāṇa), for the knowledge that encompasses the minds of others, for the knowledge of the recollection of past lives (pubbenivāsānussati-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of faring according to kamma (yathākammupaga-ñāṇa), for the knowledge of the future (anāgataṃsa-ñāṇa), and for adverting.
A non-clinging phenomenon is a condition, by object condition, for a clinging phenomenon: A gift … virtue … having performed the uposatha observance, one relishes that and delights in it; with reference to that, lust arises, view arises. Things formerly well practiced … from jhāna … the eye … the base … one relishes and delights in the non-clinging aggregates; with reference to that, lust arises, view ….
