[224] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu is a corrupter of families (kuladūsaka), one of bad conduct. If, in that case, the bhikkhus think thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu is a corrupter of families, one of bad conduct; come, let us carry out an act of banishment (pabbājanīyakamma) against him," and they carry out the act of banishment against him — by an incomplete assembly, contrary to the Dhamma … by a complete assembly, contrary to the Dhamma; by an incomplete assembly, in accordance with the Dhamma; by an incomplete assembly, with a semblance of the Dhamma; by a complete assembly, with a semblance of the Dhamma. The Saṅgha present there disputes: "It is an act by an incomplete assembly, contrary to the Dhamma; an act by a complete assembly, contrary to the Dhamma; an act by an incomplete assembly, in accordance with the Dhamma; an act by an incomplete assembly, with a semblance of the Dhamma; an act by a complete assembly, with a semblance of the Dhamma; the act is not done, the act is badly done, the act must be done again." Therein, bhikkhus, those bhikkhus who say thus: "It is an act by a complete assembly, with a semblance of the Dhamma," and those bhikkhus who say thus: "The act is not done, the act is badly done, the act must be done again" — these bhikkhus therein are speakers of Dhamma. These five rounds are stated in brief.
