[229] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu against whom the Saṅgha has carried out an act of censure (tajjanīyakamma) behaves properly, becomes subdued, conducts himself so as to merit release, and asks for the revocation of the act of censure. If in that case it occurs to the bhikkhus thus: "Friends, this bhikkhu, against whom the Saṅgha has carried out an act of censure, behaves properly, has become subdued, conducts himself so as to merit release, and asks for the revocation of the act of censure. Come, let us revoke the act of censure for him." They revoke the act of censure for him — in accordance with Dhamma, but as a divided assembly (vaggā). The Saṅgha present there disputes: "It is a divided act not in accordance with Dhamma; a united act not in accordance with Dhamma; a divided act in accordance with Dhamma; a divided act by a semblance of Dhamma; a united act by a semblance of Dhamma; the act is not done, the act is wrongly done, the act must be done again." Bhikkhus, those bhikkhus there who said thus: "It is a divided act not in accordance with Dhamma," and those bhikkhus who said thus: "The act is not done, the act is wrongly done, the act must be done again" — these bhikkhus there are speakers of Dhamma.
