[5] [Paravādin:] I am not to be refuted thus. Well then, as to the refutation (niggaha) you make of me — namely: "If the person (puggala) is apprehended (upalabbhati) in a real and ultimate sense (sacchikaṭṭha-paramaṭṭhena), then indeed, good sir, it should be said: 'Whatever is real and ultimate, in accordance with that, that person is apprehended in a real and ultimate sense.' What you assert there — that it should indeed be said that the person is apprehended in a real and ultimate sense, but that it should not be said that whatever is real and ultimate, in accordance with that, that person is apprehended in a real and ultimate sense — is wrong. But if it should not be said that whatever is real and ultimate, in accordance with that, that person is apprehended in a real and ultimate sense, then indeed, good sir, it should not be said that the person is apprehended in a real and ultimate sense. What you assert there — that it should indeed be said that the person is apprehended in a real and ultimate sense, but that it should not be said that whatever is real and ultimate, in accordance with that, that person is apprehended in a real and ultimate sense — this of yours is wrong" — that being so, the refutation that was made [by you] is a refutation ill done; the rejoinder (paṭikamma) [made by me] is well done; the carrying-through of the argument (paṭipādanā) is well done. The Conclusion Tetrad (niggamacatukka). The First Refutation.
