[1116] For whomever the bodily formation (kāyasaṅkhāra) ceases, does the verbal formation (vacīsaṅkhāra) cease for that one?
At the moment of dissolution (bhaṅgakkhaṇa) of the in-breaths and out-breaths (assāsa-passāsā) of those without thought (vitakka) and examination (vicāra), the bodily formation of those [beings] ceases, but the verbal formation of those [beings] does not cease. For sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) beings who have attained the first jhāna (paṭhamajjhāna), at the moment of dissolution of the in-breaths and out-breaths, both the bodily formation of those [beings] ceases and the verbal formation ceases.
Or: for whomever the verbal formation ceases, does the bodily formation cease for that one?
At the moment of dissolution of the thought and examination of those without in-breaths and out-breaths, the verbal formation of those [beings] ceases, but the bodily formation of those [beings] does not cease. For sense-sphere beings who have attained the first jhāna, at the moment of dissolution of the in-breaths and out-breaths, both the verbal formation of those [beings] ceases and the bodily formation ceases.
