[469] For whom the eye base (cakkhāyatana) does not arise, will the mind base (manāyatana) not arise for that one? — As for all who are passing away and those without eye who are being reborn: for them the eye base does not arise, but it is not the case that for them the mind base will not arise. As for those who are attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent existence (pañcavokāra) and those in their final existence (pacchimabhavika) in the formless realm (arūpa): for them the eye base does not arise, and the mind base will not arise.
Or, for whom the mind base will not arise, does the eye base not arise for that one? — As for those in their final existence who are being reborn into the five-constituent existence: for them the mind base will not arise, but it is not the case that for them the eye base does not arise. As for those who are attaining final Nibbāna in the five-constituent existence and those in their final existence in the formless realm: for them the mind base will not arise, and the eye base does not arise.
