[642] For whom the joy faculty (somanassindriya) does not arise, does the wisdom faculty (paññindriya) not arise for him?
For those being reborn without joy (somanassa) but associated with knowledge (ñāṇa), and, in the course of existence (pavatta), at the moment of arising (uppādakkhaṇa) of a mind (citta) dissociated from joy and associated with knowledge — for them the joy faculty does not arise, but it is not the case that for them the wisdom faculty does not arise. For all [beings] at the moment of dissolution (bhaṅgakkhaṇa) of the mind, at the moment of arising of a mind dissociated from joy and dissociated from knowledge, for those who have attained cessation (nirodhasamāpanna), and for non-percipient beings (asaññasatta) — for them the joy faculty does not arise and the wisdom faculty does not arise.
Or else, for whom the wisdom faculty does not arise, does the joy faculty not arise for him?
For those being reborn with joy but dissociated from knowledge, and, in the course of existence, at the moment of arising of a mind dissociated from knowledge and associated with joy — for them the wisdom faculty does not arise, but it is not the case that for them the joy faculty does not arise. For all [beings] at the moment of dissolution of the mind, at the moment of arising of a mind dissociated from knowledge and dissociated from joy, for those who have attained cessation, and for non-percipient beings — for them the wisdom faculty does not arise and the joy faculty does not arise.
