[130] A phenomenon (dhamma) with thought-conception and discursive thought (savitakka-savicāra) is a condition for a phenomenon without thought-conception, with mere discursive thought (avitakka-vicāramatta), by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya).
Having given a gift (dāna), having undertaken virtue (sīla), and having performed the uposatha observance (uposatha-kamma), one reviews it; taking that as object, thought-conception (vitakka) arises. One reviews what was formerly well practised. Having emerged from a jhāna with thought-conception and discursive thought, … having emerged from the path (magga), … having emerged from fruition (phala), one reviews the fruition; taking that as object, thought-conception arises.
Noble ones (ariyā) review the defilements (kilesa) that have been abandoned; they review the defilements that have been suppressed; they know the defilements formerly indulged in. They see with insight the aggregates (khandhā) with thought-conception and discursive thought as impermanent, as suffering (dukkha), as not-self; they relish them, they delight in them; taking that as object, thought-conception arises. Taking as object the aggregates with thought-conception and discursive thought, thought-conception arises.
