[566] A phenomenon (dhamma) that is both a tie (gantha) and subject to ties (ganthaniya) is a condition, by object condition (ārammaṇa-paccaya), for a phenomenon that is both a tie and subject to ties: taking ties as object, ties arise.
The root (question) should be asked. Taking ties as object, aggregates (khandhā) that are subject to ties but not ties arise.
The root (question) should be asked. Taking ties as object, ties and the aggregates associated with them arise.
A phenomenon that is subject to ties but not a tie is a condition, by object condition, for a phenomenon that is subject to ties but not a tie: a gift … virtue … the uposatha observance … one reviews it; what was formerly well done …; jhāna …; the noble ones review change-of-lineage (gotrabhū), they review cleansing (vodāna); the defilements that have been abandoned …; they review the defilements that have been suppressed; they know the defilements formerly indulged in; the eye … the base (vatthu) … aggregates that are subject to ties but not ties, as impermanent …; grief (domanassa) arises; with the divine eye one sees a form, with the divine ear element (dibbā sotadhātu) one hears a sound. All should be given in full. It is a condition, by object condition, for adverting (āvajjana).
A phenomenon that is subject to ties but not a tie is a condition, by object condition, for a phenomenon that is both a tie and subject to ties: a gift … virtue … having performed the uposatha observance, one relishes and delights in it; taking that as object, lust (rāga) arises, wrong view (diṭṭhi) …, doubt (vicikicchā) …, restlessness (uddhacca) …, grief arises; what was formerly well done …; having emerged from jhāna, the jhāna …; the eye … the base … one relishes and delights in aggregates that are subject to ties but not ties; taking that as object, lust arises, wrong view …, grief arises.
A phenomenon that is subject to ties but not a tie is a condition, by object condition, for a phenomenon that is both a tie and subject to ties and for a phenomenon that is subject to ties but not a tie: a gift … virtue … the uposatha observance …; what was formerly well done …; having emerged from jhāna, the jhāna …; the eye … the base … one relishes and delights in aggregates that are subject to ties but not ties; taking that as object, ties and the aggregates associated with them arise.
In the same way the other three also should be given in full; they should be formulated with "taking as object."
In this dyad there is no supramundane (lokuttara). It is the same as the tie dyad, without any difference; it should be specified as "subject to ties." For the path (magga), nine questions should be formulated.
The Tie-and-Subject-to-Ties Dyad (gantha-ganthaniya-duka) is finished.
