[484] What are the eight legitimate suspensions of the Pātimokkha (dhammikāni pātimokkhaṭṭhapanāni)? A bhikkhu suspends the Pātimokkha:
1. on account of a failure in virtue (sīlavipatti) that has a root (samūlikā), when it has not been committed;
2. on account of a failure in virtue that has a root, when it has been committed;
3. on account of a failure in conduct (ācāravipatti) that has a root, when it has not been committed;
4. on account of a failure in conduct that has a root, when it has been committed;
5. on account of a failure in view (diṭṭhivipatti) that has a root, when it has not been committed;
6. on account of a failure in view that has a root, when it has been committed;
7. on account of a failure in livelihood (ājīvavipatti) that has a root, when it has not been committed;
8. on account of a failure in livelihood that has a root, when it has been committed.
These are the eight legitimate suspensions of the Pātimokkha.
