[486] What are the nine legitimate (dhammika) suspensions of the Pātimokkha (pātimokkhaṭṭhapana)? One suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in virtue (sīlavipatti) that has a root (samūlikā), which has not been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in virtue that has a root, which has been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in virtue that has a root, which has both been committed and not been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in conduct (ācāravipatti) that has a root, which has not been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in conduct that has a root, which has been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in conduct that has a root, which has both been committed and not been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in view (diṭṭhivipatti) that has a root, which has not been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in view that has a root, which has been committed; one suspends the Pātimokkha on account of a failure in view that has a root, which has both been committed and not been committed.
